Before I had my son I LOVED a lie-in…… who doesn’t?
I also appreciate one even more now I’m a Mummy.
After a rough night of wakes, it is so tempting to let baby and yourself sleep in. However, I know you might hate to hear this but actually this will make things worse and result in another rough night and throw naps off.
We want to avoid this because by letting them ‘catch-up’, it sends a message to their circadian rhythm, that it’s OK to have a rough night as you can sleep in or have a really early nap when you wake and even an early night….. we do NOT want this!
I did this with my son who would wake at 4/4:30am. He would then have a nap around 7am and this would mess up the whole day. Naps were all out of whack and then bedtime was too early, meaning I was stuck like this for about 10 months!!!!
When they wake post 6am, get them up open the curtains and let the light in. This all helps set the rhythm for the day. Take them downstairs and offer a feed and start your day.
I know they will seem shattered but this will pass as you set their body clocks into something that looks a bit more humane and will keep your day of naps on track.
Tiredness is not the devil. Use it to your advantage and ignore the nonsense out there that blames overtiredness for everything.
You’ve got this!
