This is a VERY common misconception that is banded around A LOT! Now, as a Mum of a child who was a chronic early riser I understand how desperate you can feel let alone how shattered.

After working with 100’s of families now, I can safely say that if you have an early riser then putting them to bed early WILL NOT HELP and will actually make things worse in most cases.

I am seeing more and more families come to me after being told by others that the reason their baby is waking constantly in the night is due to them being ‘overtired’.

This thing is folks the research and science just doesn’t back this up!

For example, if you have a 7 month old who is having 3 hours worth of sleep, as this is what some accounts suggest (crazy!!!), and then you are putting them to be at 7pm and expecting a 7am wake…… you have no chance!

We need to look at total sleep over a 24 hour period and then work that into a sleep schedule around your baby. I have worked with some 7 month old’s that only needed 12 hours in total. They had 2 naps totally 2 hours and then we can only expect 10 hours overnight.

If your little one is waking early, the chances are their daytime sleep is now stealing it from the night and they are up at 5am, as they have had enough sleep!
